SWEET POTATO HORNWORM OUTBREAK


Important Notice:

This is to inform the general public that there is an outbreak of a pest attacking the Sweet potato crop known as the Sweet potato Hornworm. Outbreaks of this occasional worm have been reported in Amuria, Katakwi, Soroti and Kumi and Rukungiri Districts as of 30/10/2009.
Description of the Hornworm:
In its early stage this caterpillar has a white body and a black horn on it’s behind. Later it changes to green or brown with prominent, black lines on each side of the body. The head is also green or brown with 3 dark stripes on each side.
Damage:
These large worms feed on the leaves. By eating the leaves of the plant they cause reduction in the yields. The hornworms move in large numbers and hide under leaves.
Control:
• For a small garden pick the worms and destroy them.
• In cases of high population of the worm spray with Cypermethrin and Deltamethrin.
Please report to your nearest Agricultural Officer or Local Council 1 if you see this worm.
