Improved groundnuts most popular short-term enterprise

Groundnut technology is one of the fastest growing and income earning enterprise across the country. The improved technologies being provided for under NAADS include: serenut I, II, III & IV. Farmers are being trained in improved agronomic practices such row planting, spacing, optimal plant populations, timely weeding and post harvest handling.

The majority of group members are replicating the groundnut technology on their own farm household fields in the districts of: Arua, Busia, Soroti and Tororo, among others. Other popular technologies are the improved beehives that make apiculture very profitable.

In Soroti District, over 400 bags of serenut costing approximately Shs40 million have been purchased using the district technology fund from farmer groups in preparation for the new planting season. As a consequence of increased demand by farmers for the improved groundnuts, Katine sub-county has procured 15 bags of serenut III & IV in readiness for multiplication.

In Busia, farmers harvested a total of 8,225 Kg of groundnut seed from their TDSs in the last quarter. The market values for improved technology seed ranged from Shs 2,000/= to 3,000/= per Kg. The total earnings for farmers from groundnuts ranged between Shs16.45 to 24.67 million.

Groundnuts farmer groups in Arua district harvested 10,357 Kg of unshelled groundnuts and sold it for Shs26.66 million.
