Maize Mill transforms lives of farmers in Buyende district
Before NAADS supported Nkondo Multipurpose Rural Produce Cooperative Society with a maize mill, the farmers used to travel 10 kilometres from Kiwaaba Village, Ndulya parish in Nkondo Sub county to access a maize milling facility.
The cooperative society brings together 125 farmers and prior to receiving the maize mill from NAADS in August 2019, they would sell their maize in grain form which fetched them less money compared to the maize flour they the producing currently.
One of the board members Kaleebi Cornelius says before they received the maize mill, they would sell a kilogram of maize grain at shs.450, but with the mill they are able to sell a kilogram of maize flour at shs. 1,800 and a by-product of maize brand at shs.500 per kilo. Out of 100kgs of maize grain, the farmers are able to get 70kgs of maize flour.
From the proceeds acquired from the mill, the cooperative has acquired land to build their permanent residence and plans to start building by end of 2020. The group also owns 35 acres of land on which they grow maize and other crops.
Kaleebi says the 350kgs mill has transformed the lives of the members as many are able to earn more from selling the maize flour than it used to be with the maize grain. He adds that because of the presence of the mill in Kiwaaba village, many people have engaged in maize growing as it provides a ready market for farmers.
The cooperative also received a tractor from NAADS in December 2019 which they use for clearing the land for production. In first season of 2020, the tractor ploughed 150 acres for both members and non-members.
