Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) and their Development Partners, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA are implementing the Promotion of Rice Development (PRIDE) Project also known as the 1238 Rice Development Project.
This project targets to contribute about 10% to the National Rice Development Strategy (NRDS, 2008-2018) target by increasing rice production in Uganda by 20,000MT by 2016. This will subsequently contribute to achievement of the DSIP objectives.
By June 2013, the project had trained 7,051 farmers and availed them with 1 Kg of seed each. Also the project had trained another 250 farmers with plans of availing them with seed and another 1,646 farmers who were not interested in seed production.
The District Agriculture Officer (DAO) and District NAADS Co-coordinator (DNC) are trained as Subject Matter Specialists (SMS to supervise the activities of the sub-county ToTs and compile the information collected from the sub-counties.
The National Team from MAAIF, NARO/NaCRRI and NAADS Secretariat are charged with the role of technical backstopping this project, the Zonal Supervision and monitoring meetings are used to share information and lessons learnt by the ToT's and the District staff while implementing the project activities.
The project availed seed to the beneficiary farmers. The concept used is to avail 1Kg of quality seed to each farmer who is expected to produce 40-50Kg of seed.
The ZARDIs do carry out Adaptive Research and technical backstopping of the districts.
The project focused on understanding farmers' appreciation of the Nase 4 variety and assessing the level of preference which affects its multiplication and continued utilization by the farmers.
The purpose of farmer seed production activities is to produce their own seed which they can use to kick-start grain production and continued maintenance of a small plot of rice seed.
Some farmers therefore have successfully adopted the approach by using their own produced seed. The project expects 50% of the farmers to adopt the technology being promoted by using the seed produced in the next rice growing season.
